The study of law is perhaps one of the most interesting areas as there are no ‘right’ answers. You will do well in the examinations by being able to support your arguments by established principles or in reference to court cases.

No one will know all areas of the law – perhaps there is no need to. Lawyers do not know all the cases and the volumes of reference are selected after research to find one that convinces the judge that their point of view should be accepted.

Lawyers generally understand the established principles and what is important is for them to know first the rules and next the exception to these rules. Then there are exceptional rules and exceptions to exceptions. The best lawyers (like Lord Denning) are also surprisingly
mathematicians!

The study of law gives you an insight into human behaviour – you will in see in Criminal Law, for example, that people are greedy and will do many things to cheat or kill. You get to learn about legal systems and the weakness of the various legal systems. You will learn about rules of evidence, about the concept of precedence and about our constitution.

Most lawyers get to specialize in areas such as commercial law, criminal law or family law, etc.

The study of a law degree does not automatically entitle you to become a lawyer as you will have to complete other formalities to be admitted as a professional.

The law degree is pursued in countries like US as a post-graduate qualification. Many CEOs, doctors, accountants also pursue a law degree so that they can understand the complex nature of law which all of us are presumed to know.

One of the indirect benefits of the study of law is that it enables you to “sell yourself”. There is perhaps no other area of study that gets you to “sell yourself” to your prospective employer or to convince anyone in your office or family that they should accept your point of view!
