Students should normally pursue a Law course at the National University of Singapore to be called to the Singapore Bar.

ALTERNATIVE ENTRY

The alternative entry is to pursue a Diploma in Law from the University of London at Stansfield. After completing the Diploma in Law, students should seek to transfer and complete their Law degree at one of the following scheduled universities:

After completing the Law degree at on of the above scheduled universities with a minimum of Upper Second Class Honours degree or equivalent, the candidates are required to complete the Postgraduate Diploma in Singapore Law which is administered by the Board of Legal Education.

Candidates are also required to complete the pupilage formality at a law firm before finally being admitted as an Advocate and Solicitor of the Singapore Supreme Court.

 

EXEMPTION FROM LOWER SECOND CLASS HONOURS DEGREE

In order to be called to the Singapore Bar, students should obtain a Lower Second Class Honours degree or equivalent.

Those who do not obtain a Lower Second Class Honours Degree in law may be eligible to qualify for admission as an advocate and solicitor of the Singapore Supreme Court by obtaining an exemption from Rule 15A of the Legal Profession (Qualified Persons) Rules. To do so, they need to submit an application in the prescribed form and undergo an interview conducted by the Board of Legal Education.

For the purposes of exemption from Rule 15A (for those who do not obtain a Lower Second Class Honours Degree), the candidates should be:

  1. Singapore citizen or PR
  2. Has obtained a Lower Second Class or equivalent from a scheduled UK university or been ranked in the highest 70 percent in terms of academic performance in the other scheduled universities
  3. Is either qualified as a solicitor of England and Wales or Hong Kong or has relevant work experience as follows:
    1. In a law firm in Singapore or elsewhere
    2. As an Assistant Public Prosecutor or legal executive in the Attorney–General's Chambers;
    3. As a legal executive in a law office in the public service or statutory board;
    4. As a legal counsel in a corporation or entity (whether publicly lister or otherwise) in Singapore or elsewhere, including a multinational or an international organization

Candidates assessed by the Board of Legal Education to possess the requisite standard for the purposes of admission to the Singapore Bar will be issued with a Certificate of Exemption from the requirement of obtaining an Upper Second Class Honours or equivalent from the above universities.

With the Certificate of Exemption, candidates will be able to complete the Postgraduate Diploma in Singapore Law which is conducted by the Board of Legal Education in order to fulfill the requirements of admission to the Singapore Bar.
