Why pursue this?
A globalised economy will not function without banks and financial institutions. The career opportunities in this industry are wide ranging – from investment banker, equity analyst, bond trader, forex trader, credit analyst or the personal banker.
You have to be a good economist first to be a successful banker. The Banking and Finance degree from University of London is very special as it provides firm foundation in Economics, Banking & Finance.
The London School of Economics, which sets the syllabus and marks the examinations, is globally respected in the field of economics and is located right in the centre of London’s financial hub.
Which degree is for you?
The following three degrees are appropriate for those interested in pursuing careers in the banking & financial sectors, and are dependent on your goals and aptitude. For example, if you are not mathematically inclined and prefer to be a personal banker the B.Sc. Banking and Finance may be appropriate. If you love mathematics and your goal is to be in risk management, the B.Sc. in Mathematics may be more appropriate.
As the first year subjects are similar, students may be allowed to switch to relevant degrees of their choice before embarking on the second year of studies.
The B.Sc Banking and Finance is more broad-based and less mathematically based.
This degree is suited if you wish to pursue a career in accountancy, consulting, commercial or investment banking, trading and sales or risk management.
The B.Sc Economics and Finance is more specialized and is much more mathematical than the B.Sc. Banking and Finance degree.
This degree has been designed for those who are interested in a career as a financial economist whether in academia, finance (investment or commercial banking, risk management, research, fund management, or securities trading) or government.
The B.Sc Mathematics and Economics is for those who are more mathematically inclined.
This degree has been designed for those who are interested in a career in forecasting or risk management or for those students with high mathematical ability, combining and relating mathematics, statistics and economics and is appropriate for those who wish to further their studies, or for professional and managerial careers.
